If a child sneaks away from home to receive a vaccine and LIVES, despite every action taken by their parents/grandparents generation to attempt to prevent their receiving such “necessary” healthcare provisions… then I am not going to blame the child for being depressed about the very real, very scary, very tragic predicament that they find themselves in.

Trump almost won, he may win again, and this time he said (there is video evidence of him doing it) that it will be the last time that anyone needs to vote, ever again; or in the UK Brexit has already happened, and there’s no coming back from that, especially as the more time passes - the UK is simply out of the loop now, and falls further so with every year that passes (even if they rejoin now, who will manage to “forget” what happened before? like an abusive husband, they revealed who they are).

And don’t even get me started on the issue of the kid diddling - a couple years ago a huge scandal involving I think it was thousands of pastors in the southern Baptist organizations across mostly the southern states in the USA, and as always, more than it happening the scandal was the cover-ups afterwards.

What is wrong with you if you think that their depression is a by-product of their “immaturity”? Unlike the olds who are willing to look the other way as their literal children are being physically raped, and worse yet society itself crumbling apart, with democracy hanging by a subjective thread, they at least are willing to READ SOMETHING - a book, an article, or watch the actual debate where Trump blabbers like a child at how big his crowd sizes are, and how toilets don’t flush as well anymore, etc., then goes off on a tangent about people wanting to eat cats and dogs or whatnot. Plus, has anyone looked outside at the weather in the last month…?

If the poster themselves removed it, then no - these usually shows up as “deleted” rather than “removed” (but not always). Sometimes apps that don’t properly pay attention to the removal request can still see these, but I know of no effective way to view these routinely, short of spinning up your own instance and archiving not only every post and comment but also all of their edits as well.

For mod removal, you can check the modlog (for your instance here, or the one for Lemmy.World, both of which theoretically should show the same contents, but in practice they don’t for whatever reasons). Note that is the entire modlog for the entire Fediverse, so it requires filtering to find the specific post/comment that you want to know about. The Lemmy devs could help people see the modlog much easier, but they don’t. They don’t seem too big on such democratic efforts, and very often simply ban people outright, from the entire instance including communities they’ve never once visited, if you ever criticize what they say or if you say something that they do not agree with. Though they did recently release a feature to allow mods to do this - further increasing the power of the establishment, while leaving common plebes like us to have to filter the modlog (which also can hide the identity of the mod who removed it).

Ergo, I would not hold my breath waiting for this feature. At least not on Lemmy, but perhaps from the more democratically-managed PieFed or Sublinks or Mbin or such… I could really see that happening for those?

Edit: oh but for text like the “removed”, hell no, that’s also a lost cause - at least, again, on the Lemmy codebase, unless you use an instance that decides not to implement the language filtering.

I meant like a daily usage situation - e.g. working from a terminal, running MacVim, and things like Firefox and Slack etc. all work fine from a Mac - but I don’t self-host, and I run actual Mac OSX itself, so my answers may be of limited utility to you.

If someone else is reading this I would look into running a Jellfin server from a machine running Linux, which can be connected to from a device running iOS or Android or whatever they want - but your kodi+mpd already sounds like it should do the trick.

Hopefully you can avoid running Mac OSX itself, but if that’s not possible then perhaps at worst you could get a machine that does that and then partially isolate it on the network? (though that is beyond my skillset:-)

For TV I just an ancient ChromeCast (iirc it’s a first-generation even!) and that works from everything (ironically one of the harder solutions was from Samsung mobile, though even ancient iPads have apps that will make it happen). I worry about when my TV and especially the ChromeCast dies what will I do - it will take so much time to investigate a replacement, it seems all/most of the newer solutions are trying to inject ads or whatever into the stream, or even just not working as simply as the old. Mine is security through obscurity, which only works for so long until the hardware flat wears out:-).

And I barely have a backup solution - just a single SSD that I put stuff onto when I think about it, and is aging so when it too wears out… I have so much catching up that I need to do, I’m setting myself up for pain most likely:-(. But also I tend to “stream” most things rather than “download”, so my need for thus is extremely much smaller.

Oh yuck. I also switched away - half Linux, two-thirds Mac (hehe, all fun:-) - but not everyone can manage that.

I would defend anyone’s right to be different as well. However, that’s not the case here - you said it yourself, you really are missing a huge history between Hexbear.net and… well, everyone else across the Fediverse (and highly ironically, as such they would ruthlessly make fun of you, for speaking without knowing - i.e. you are someone who would defend them, but not vice versa). They poke fun at liberals, conservatives, anyone from the West, etc., and the issue isn’t so much their right to exist or be different, but the need for the rest of the Fediverse to spread their message out in the same manner as all the other messages, which are governed by an entirely different set of policies and code of conduct.

I hope you will agree with me that the rights to do a school shooting, or the right to block someone else’s access to medical care… is really no “right” at all. That is to say that they can be however they like, but the moment that they federate with the rest of the world, it crosses over into our rights, whether we want to receive what they offer or not, and even more so to promote & share it to our own users.

But don’t take my word for it: visit e.g. ChapoTrapHouse or the_dunk_tank and see for yourself. Or here’s an example post, where they took a poll on which other instances to deferate from, then promptly ignored the results that said no and defederated from them anyway:-P lemm.ee for instance had 41 votes to keep it and only 4 for it to go, but despite the additional order of magnitude and some passionate responses defending the former (e.g. “But man we should at least stay federated with lemm.ee, that instance’s admin has been very reasonable and it hasn’t caused much trouble at all; nothing that banning any troublemakers can’t fix.”), they defederated from it anyway. And the reasons stated to keep it are also informative - basically so that they can proselytize to them, though notice the distinct lack of wanting to converse with them as equals. And that is just one instance, among the very few that will even consider federation with hexbear.net to begin with. Also, to balance that out, read lemm.ee’s policy on federation with hexbear.net - notice how 100% polar opposite it is, not just in terms of facts but of behaviors.

There is also programming.dev’s response, tldr version: “Hexbear defederated from us so to prevent one way conversations I have added them to our blocklist as well. If the hexbear admins decide to unblock us I can do the same”… followed in the very next post by “It is very likely we will be federating with Hexbear again…” - which despite the fact that that did not end up happening (as of September 8, 2024 I can see hexbear.net on their instances list, make sure to switch the tab at the top to “Blocked Instances”), I want to point out how extremely friendly other instance admins continue to try to be, towards them, though this behavior seems to have never been rewarded in return. And it’s not just these two instances - there are so very many, here’s another at sh.itjust.works, where they thought long & hard about it (mind you this is an EXTREMELY permissive server, chock-full of reasonable-minded people, which you’ll see as/if you read the other posts in that community), and somewhat shockingly seemed ready to do the defederation, but before they could, once again hexbear.net preemptively did it first, thus making the issue moot.

In short, they know exactly how they are - and many people routinely flee from it to spread elsewhere in an attempt to get away from the extremely heavy-handed authoritarian moderation/admin practices. When you tolerate the intolerant though…

If you enjoy LGBTQIA+ content, it is everywhere, e.g. the variety of blahaj’s that exist - the most popular of which is https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/, with the highest number of users (and to reveal my own bias, I’ve never seen anything written from their admin, Ada, that I have not thoroughly enjoyed reading - if I could follow accounts on the Fediverse, this is one of a mere handful of people across the entire world that I think I would do that for:-). Similarly with “different”/odd content - we love being different here on the Fediverse:-) - and again with left-leaning content (in fact people that are not left-leaning are quite rare).

But I advise to steer well clear of bigots. Except of course to learn about the situation - definitely check it out, and then you’ll know. I know it looks like shit-posting, especially with the rather poor choice of wording in OP’s title, but there truly is an actual history behind all of this. The shit-talking looks casual, but it’s not: hexbear has truly earned most of the ire that is directed its way. And they seem okay with that, some even seem proud of it? :-P

Though I’m on the other end of the spectrum: having spent nearly a decade listening to people’s oddball takes on everything under the sun, and bending over backwards to accommodate it all as if it had some semblance of validity, I now find myself wanting to substantially narrow my input stream. Ngl, reading and watching/listening to - and more importantly thinking deeply about - such things as Innuendo Studios’ The Alt Right Playbook, and the actual Trump presidency that caused our current inflation crisis and oh yeah killed more people than all wars combined iirc, really changed my approach on giving such viewpoints the time of day. There’s a difference between sounding smart (like screetching: “show me your source material, bitch!”, while also looking down on the recipient in every way), vs. actually being thus, imho.

Most instances have already blocked lemmygrad. Yours is one of a very few that has not.

Not all. People over-generalize to forget that Lemmy.ml (and lately more people from Midwest.social) have always blended the experiences, being able to post to both “sides” like hexbear.net and lemmy.world that are defederated from one another.

It is a good one. I mean, there are definitely situations where being not-nice is required, e.g. police dealing with a shooting spree in-progress that shows no sign of abating on its own, but as a whole, I do think society would progress much more smoothly if people were to live by that. (and by “that” I mean logic as a whole, of which this is only one tiny piece:-P)
