Couldn’t that be said of any and all groups? A few bad posters has soured me on the lemm.ee instance, but would it be logical or fair or me to assume that a few bad experiences reflects an entire group?

I am not from ML nor do I have a Hexbear alt of any sort, but I defend Hexbear’s right to be different. They seem to be a younger group of anti-capitalists so I find their perspectives interesting.

Edit: I am still somewhat new to Lemmy, so maybe there is some history with Hexbear that I am ignorant of, but until I see it for myself, I enjoy their content and will continue to support Hexbear.

I mostly agree. Ideally we would end car dependency first so that driving can truly be a luxury and not a necessity, but that isn’t happening so if someone doesn’t respect our traffic laws we still need to take their license away.

Basically, the problem with cars is not cars themselves as a concept, it’s the overuse and misuse. But unfortunately, that isn’t changing anytime soon.

So true, extra emphasis on the misuse in the US. I was recently in Iceland, which is a very car centric country, and I was amazed by how much better their car situation was. They kept their roads nice and tight, used roundabouts, they had 30kmph(18mph) speed limits in residential and city centers, raised sidewalks, etc. Best of all most people drove small cars! It was the first time I enjoyed driving and didn’t mind being around cars because I actually felt safe.

But then I got back to the US and it was disgusting how wasteful we are with our car infrastructure. Instead of 9ft car lanes our lanes are 12ft minimum often with 8ft buffers. Even small suburban streets are 40 to 50 feet wide. Our parking lots look like lakes of asphalt, and our intersections are so fucking huge there is no safe way for a kid to use them

Also, your position is severely lacking. Please try to factor in the total emissions from car tires and the impact that has on public health. Next facture in the obesity epidemic which directly correlates with car dependency. Also, please consider that we have created a world where people drive to a gym to run on a treadmill because it isn’t safe for them to exercise outside. That one is harder to put a number on but it is extremely dystopian.

So if you want all your organs polluted with microplastics from car tire dust and you fully support the depression, loneliness, and obesity epidemics, then keep defending car dependency because that is hidden cost of cars that people don’t talk about nearly enough.

Cars were forced on us. They are a solution to problems create that we cannot solve without a functioning democracy (which the US has never had, it has always been a plutocracy that serves the rich over the needs and will of the people.)

So no, I strongly disagree that people actually want car dependency. When cities were first destroying their city centers to make room for cars, people fought against it. But these days most people don’t know anything else than car dependency. But when they travel to other countries it is like taking the pill from the matrix and they wake up to how hellish and dystopian car dependency truly is

And people don’t want to waste an extra 45 minutes getting to their destination by waiting on public transportation. We’re a population of people who - when we want something done - we do it now. Delays are unacceptable

Cities built around public transit (like Seoul, Tokyo, Zurich, Vienna) don’t have that problem. Cars are what create unexpected delays. Cars are what ruin cities for everyone.

I want to add that not only are the # of lanes increasing, but the size of each lane is also increasing. Every street my city remakes goes from 10ft lanes to 12 to 14ft lanes, sometimes with giant dead lanes in the middle or on the side. One of the stroads I used to cross on foot went from 50ft wide to 100ft wide. It is sincerely, deeply unhinged how we are destroying our cities with asphalt and concrete
