A good start, but Jesus, why haven’t they planted any trees?

Critical thinking is essentially learning to ask good questions and also caring enough to follow the threads you find.
For example, if mental health is to blame for school shootings then what is causing the mental health crisis and are we ensuring that everyone has affordable access to mental healthcare? Okay, we have a list of factors that adversely impact mental health, what can we do to address each one? Etc.
Critical thinking isn’t hard, it just takes time, effort.
I think devil horns would actually make him look less evil. It would distract from the deep void that hid behind his sunken black eyes and reptile smooth head, the void where his humanity and compassion for the safety of others had once been many decades ago.
After reading the title and seeing the black abyss in the eyes of the great-value Voldemort wannabe, I was scared for a moment that someone who was so openly hostile towards the safety of cyclists could win an election. It brings me great relief to know that is not the case.
Considering how the US’s CIA will infiltrate leftist groups to undermine and break those groups up, would that make the US an authoritarian state? And if someone passively enables authoritarianism through complacency then does that not make them authoritarians by default?
Read up on Operation Gladio if you want a peak at how deeply fascist / authoritarian the US truly is: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Gladio
Couldn’t that be said of any and all groups? A few bad posters has soured me on the lemm.ee instance, but would it be logical or fair or me to assume that a few bad experiences reflects an entire group?
I am not from ML nor do I have a Hexbear alt of any sort, but I defend Hexbear’s right to be different. They seem to be a younger group of anti-capitalists so I find their perspectives interesting.
Edit: I am still somewhat new to Lemmy, so maybe there is some history with Hexbear that I am ignorant of, but until I see it for myself, I enjoy their content and will continue to support Hexbear.
Cars not only kill the planet, but they are erode society so they are far worse than cruise ships imo.
I mostly agree. Ideally we would end car dependency first so that driving can truly be a luxury and not a necessity, but that isn’t happening so if someone doesn’t respect our traffic laws we still need to take their license away.
Please God, I want to wake up in a walkable sustainable world without car dependency and without capitalism
Not everyone, but most people live in major cities. And any city that is big enough to “justify” building stroads is absolutely big enough to justify having walkable communities connected by light rail or bus
Good point. They even have the same amount of number of syllables.
Also, Butterfly sounds too much like Butt-fly
Basically, the problem with cars is not cars themselves as a concept, it’s the overuse and misuse. But unfortunately, that isn’t changing anytime soon.
So true, extra emphasis on the misuse in the US. I was recently in Iceland, which is a very car centric country, and I was amazed by how much better their car situation was. They kept their roads nice and tight, used roundabouts, they had 30kmph(18mph) speed limits in residential and city centers, raised sidewalks, etc. Best of all most people drove small cars! It was the first time I enjoyed driving and didn’t mind being around cars because I actually felt safe.
But then I got back to the US and it was disgusting how wasteful we are with our car infrastructure. Instead of 9ft car lanes our lanes are 12ft minimum often with 8ft buffers. Even small suburban streets are 40 to 50 feet wide. Our parking lots look like lakes of asphalt, and our intersections are so fucking huge there is no safe way for a kid to use them
- The average occupancy of a car in my North American city is 1.2 people per car. This does not vary much by city.
- Autonomous vehicles will almost certainly be worse for traffic than human driven cars.
Is that for rush hour? Because, overall, the national average is closer to 1.5
Fully agree.
You literally called us herd animals and they you hit us with the “if that’s how you want to read that”???
Also, your position is severely lacking. Please try to factor in the total emissions from car tires and the impact that has on public health. Next facture in the obesity epidemic which directly correlates with car dependency. Also, please consider that we have created a world where people drive to a gym to run on a treadmill because it isn’t safe for them to exercise outside. That one is harder to put a number on but it is extremely dystopian.
So if you want all your organs polluted with microplastics from car tire dust and you fully support the depression, loneliness, and obesity epidemics, then keep defending car dependency because that is hidden cost of cars that people don’t talk about nearly enough.
Cars were forced on us. They are a solution to problems create that we cannot solve without a functioning democracy (which the US has never had, it has always been a plutocracy that serves the rich over the needs and will of the people.)
So no, I strongly disagree that people actually want car dependency. When cities were first destroying their city centers to make room for cars, people fought against it. But these days most people don’t know anything else than car dependency. But when they travel to other countries it is like taking the pill from the matrix and they wake up to how hellish and dystopian car dependency truly is
And people don’t want to waste an extra 45 minutes getting to their destination by waiting on public transportation. We’re a population of people who - when we want something done - we do it now. Delays are unacceptable
Cities built around public transit (like Seoul, Tokyo, Zurich, Vienna) don’t have that problem. Cars are what create unexpected delays. Cars are what ruin cities for everyone.
ever-widening highways
I want to add that not only are the # of lanes increasing, but the size of each lane is also increasing. Every street my city remakes goes from 10ft lanes to 12 to 14ft lanes, sometimes with giant dead lanes in the middle or on the side. One of the stroads I used to cross on foot went from 50ft wide to 100ft wide. It is sincerely, deeply unhinged how we are destroying our cities with asphalt and concrete
Switzerland is very car centric too, and we’re less good at high speed trains and comprehensive urban transit.
Maybe, but Switzerland has the most rail usage per capita making it arguably the most rail centric country in the world.
But she only threatens to murder pedestrians so that makes it okay. She wouldn’t actually murder them (as long they scurry out of her way
